Shantelle Svarc, 32
The announcement of the Lincoln City Half Marathon has inspired a group of women in Lincoln to commit to taking on 13.1 miles.
Shantelle is the owner Darkside Training, a female-only, strength-focused gym which aims to provide a safe space for women, and describes how they have 20 members signed up to the event;
‘Lincoln hasn’t had a Half Marathon for a number of years and I wanted to support local events. Given that I own a gym, I figured why not lead a beginner running group for this new challenge, making it accessible and far more fun!’
Shantelle herself has been running on and off since 2015, and in 2019 took on the Hedgehog Half Marathon to raise funds for a defibrillator for the gym. Shantelle’s main goal now, and the purpose of Darkside, is to create a safe and supportive environment in which women can achieve far more than they thought possible. This is an ethos which, together with the Run Leaders from Darkside, Shantelle is promoting during the group’s half marathon training journey.
Not only are the 20 women from Darkside doing something outside of their normal comfort zone, but they are also raising funds for Darkside Rising CIC, the new non-profit arm of Darkside Training.
Shantelle describes how Darkside Rising
‘seeks to challenge the perception of female strength, resilience and power through innovative physical training and educational art projects. The latest project is providing funded strength training to women at risk of postnatal depression and anxiety.’
Shantelle is pleased with how the group’s training is going so far and is really impressed with everyone’s dedication. Despite current social distancing measures, the group have continued to maintain the same running schedule and are connecting with each other via Zoom during runs. Shantelle describes that
'Even though we're running alone in the physical sense, we've still got the same group support and encouragement coming through the headphones. Running as part of a group is a really motivating way of doing it as you don’t want to let your teammates down and you also don’t want them to get further ahead in training and show you up!’
